The Beginning

In 1998 there was another 50th CHHS reunion, and it was the year that Columbia Heights attorney Vern Hoium, class of 1948, observed this special anniversary by establishing a foundation to provide scholarships to future graduates of Columbia Heights High School. Hoium enlisted other contributors to join him and his wife Nancy, including Connie Bakken, class of ’42, Earl Bakken also ’42, and Gerry and Mary Ann Herringer class of ’52.

The Need

As the cost of post-secondary education increases each year, many students at CHHS need financial assistance. The Columbia Heights High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for graduates of CHHS.  From its endowment each year one-time scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $8,500 are granted to four or five students in their second term of post-secondary education. These are awarded based on academic performance, leadership, community service, and financial need.

2015, It’s Our Turn

Now the CHHS Class of 1965 is invited to support this Foundation and the scholarships it awards, since the Reunion Planning Committee decided it is a good time for us to give back. Plan to attend the Saturday,June 27, 1 pm showing of Wrongfully Accused, written, produced and directed by Pat Proft and starring Leslie Nielsen at the Heights Theater. This is the only comedy adventure to celebrate the Columbia Heights Jamboree, and it is filled with local references and classmates’ names. Two admissions to the movie are free with your Reunion nametag, which you will receive as a result of your paid registration for Reunion events. General admission tickets to the film are $5, and all proceeds will be donated to the CHHS Alumni Scholarship Foundation. Everyone attending both the movie and the dinner at the Mermaid also will have the chance to make a donation to the Foundation.

What Should I Give?

All donations to the Foundation are fully tax deductible, and they will be greatly appreciated. Contributions in cash or by check will be received on Saturday, June 27 at the movie at the Heights Theater and also at the dinner at the Mermaid in the evening.  If you are not able to attend the reunion, contributions may be mailed to
